Common Missteps in Classroom Management
Friday October 25, 2024 11:00am - 12:30pm MDT
Classroom Management during and after school is perhaps one of the most complex and nuanced skill sets, even for the most experienced teachers and paraprofessionals. In this session, we will identify four common missteps too often taken by teachers and the best practices that should be used in their place. We'll focus on missteps relating to the overuse of corrections, separating class environment from class expectations, leveraging the public setting, and overemphasizing extrinsic motivators. Participants will apply their own experience in a reflective process and take away key strategies they can immediately implement. Join us as we get real about classroom management, give ourselves grace, and open our mindsets to the possibility of safe, consistent environments in every setting!

Whether you are a parent or someone who works with kids or teens in any capacity, it is important to learn how to teach consent and healthy boundaries in little ways at a young age. It is also important to know how to recognize and intervene when young people around you may need help or resources to get out of an emotionally or physically harmful relationship. We plan to teach and discuss these skills so that our audience can help young people in their afterschool programs and pass these skills on to other teens so they can help their friends.

Helping Staff Realize their Leadership Potential | Leadership Track
Friday October 25, 2024 4:00pm - 5:00pm MDT
When you hear the term “leadership potential”, what comes to mind? Has anyone told you that you have leadership potential? Have you ever told anyone else that they have it? What does it actually mean? Unfortunately, who we deem to have leadership potential is deeply rooted in bias and outdated (or even nonexistent) research. The truth is, there are lots of ways to be a leader and lots of people who can lead. This session will discuss the concept of leadership potential—what we mean when we use it and what this means for our work. Then we will explore the many ways leadership potential can be realized and the framework for effective leadership. The principles in this session will be applicable to you, your staff, and your students. Come ready to work and to approach leadership in a whole new way!
