This workshop series underscores that math is about more than just “getting the answer,” but it’s about the thinking and reasoning that gets you to that point. Learn tools to help you and your youth become confident problem solvers. Discover the possibilities of emphasizing the relationships between numbers and find the fun in learning flexible ways of completing calculations. I'll share strategies and resources that will give you an understanding of and build on youth’s prior math knowledge in a supportive space that allows you to play with these concepts, practice applying them with peers, and confidently implement them as you work with youth.

NBA Math Hoops leverages the game of basketball and the NBA/WNBA brands to build fundamental math and social-emotional skills through a physical and digital basketball-themed board game, a curriculum, and a community program experience. Designed for students in grades 4-8, this free program develops students’ algebra readiness prior to entering high school, while strengthening important skills including self-regulation and executive function. Through the workshop, educators will learn best practices for implementing the NBA Math Hoops game and curriculum, gain access to the program management platform and all program materials, and learn about opportunities to extend students’ learning through community events.

The Walking Classroom provides a really engaging and simple-to-use means of introducing STEM topics to OST students in grades 3 through 8. This session will be beneficial for OST site facilitators. The program is simple—students listen to the same podcast at the same time as they walk. Sample podcast titles include, Tornadoes, The Ocean Floor, The Human Body’s Slimy Shields, and Albert Einstein. A companion guide, with a lesson plan and discussion questions for each podcast, makes it easy for OST facilitators to conduct a rich post-walk discussion. Students get an extra 20 minutes of physical activity with each walk with benefits that include improved mood and better behavior. Session attendees will have the chance to go for a walk listening to a podcast.

Walk away with the knowledge to create your own red wiggler home out of resources most of us have on hand. Remove trash from the waste stream and turn launch garbage into fertilizer for a school garden or classroom plant. Return with resources to utilize red wiggler worms to teach your students about ecosystems, adaptations, and sustainability. MLS STEM Goals integrates customizable, grade-aligned STEM content, along with real MLS team statistics, into a soccer-themed board game and community program. Students represent a real MLS team in their class, competing in a series of games throughout a STEM soccer “season.” The program can be augmented with a series of community experiences, including educator training, STEM workshops and career events, and regional championship events featuring MLS STEM Goals game.
